The day before a virtual meeting will be held to determine which proposed changes to the NFL's Rooney Rule will go into effect, the league immediately made some changes to the current policy.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, changes have been made to the current Rooney Rule, dictating that at least two external minority candidates must be interviewed as part of a team's head coach search, while any other executive, GM, or coordinator jobs require one external minority candidate. This was one of the considerations mentioned in the list of proposed changes that was to be voted on in Tuesday's meeting, but it has gone through ahead of time.

The Rooney Rule, up to this point, had required only one external minority head coach candidate or senior operations candidate to be considered for an open position, but this expansion adds

Pelissero added an additional note regarding all senior-level positions within the NFL.

Among the other proposed changes that will be included in Tuesday's meeting is an added policy that benefits teams that hire a minority coach in terms of their draft positions. For instance, an organization that hired a minority coach would move up six slots from its previously determined third-round draft pick, or jump up 10 spots for hiring a minority executive. If a team were to hire both, the pick would move up by 16 spots, and could conceivably pass from the third to second round (via Dan Mennella of RADIO.COM Sports).

This stipulation has been met with disagreement by several figures, including Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, who doesn't support the gesture. Former NFL player and WEEI radio host Jermaine Wiggins went so far as to call the proposal "a joke" and compares the thought of it to life in the 1950s.
