Matt Kalman

Matt Kalman fell into covering the Bruins and the NHL by accident but is now well into his second decade on the beat. After creating the Bruins beat reporter position for the New England Hockey Journal, Matt went on to found TheBruinsBlog.net, the first credentialed blog devoted solely to the Bruins. Matt’s hockey coverage has also appeared on NHL.com, Forbes.com, ESPNBoston.com and in the Boston Herald, among several other publications. He is the author of “100 Things Bruins Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die” and the co-author with Dale Arnold of “If These Walls Could Talk: Boston Bruins.”

There were a lot of overjoyed people around the NHL on Monday night. Unfortunately for the Bruins , Zdeno Chara and his teammates weren’t among the group celebrating. He used the word twice, when he didn’t have to use it once. Tuukka Rask is far from selfish for deciding to skip the NHL All-Star Game to instead spend the time off on the beach with his family, resting up so he can be at his best for his second family: the Bruins . “I had to be kind of selfish,...

Watch out would-be rival intimidators, Brett Ritchie is starting to give the Bruins their $1 million worth of bang. Whether he can keep it up, or whether coach Bruce Cassidy will even give him a chance to find a groove, will be questions answered over the next several weeks, but there’s no doubt...

A guy from Long Island can’t get a break from the hometown scorers when he’s wearing a Boston sweater. That’s what you have to figure happened after Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was felled by a slap shot from New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk at 13:23 of the second period Saturday,...

Ever since Taylor Hall was traded by New Jersey to Arizona last month, focus has turned to New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who like Hall can become an unrestricted free agent this summer. If the Rangers make Kreider available, the 6-foot-3, 216-pound left-handed shot would inspire a legion...

The news resonated across the NHL on Thursday night: Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne became the first netminder to score a goal since 2013 when he hit an empty net from right near his own crease in a win at the Chicago Blackhawks. Zdeno Chara is closing in on 1,000 games played with the Bruins , something that many never would’ve predicted when the Bruins signed him as unrestricted free agent July 1, 2006. On this week’s The Skate Podcast, co-hosts Ken Laird and Matt Kalman were joined by NHL Network analyst and 1983 No. 1...
