Charles Barkley continues to rip Celtics for weird reasons, says they have 'too much talent' this season

Charles Barkley’s Celtics analysis continues to be really weird. Last season, the popular TNT analyst routinely chided the C’s, declaring they weren’t one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference –– despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary. Sir Charles also ripped Al Horford, saying the big man’s production isn’t impressive.

“When I was averaging his numbers, they made me retire,” Barkley said about Horford last April.

Barkley’s Celtics hate has apparently carried over into the 2018-19 season, given his postgame comments following their 105-87 victory over the Sixers Tuesday at T.D. Garden. Most people viewed the win as a testament to Boston’s depth, since they still won with Kyrie Irving only shot 2-for-14 from the field. The Celtics’ young stars, including Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, led them to victory. Tatum paced the team with 23 points and Brown added 12 –– two of which came when he posterized Joel Embiid in the paint.

But Barkley said he considers the Celtics’ 18-point win to be a warning sign. The Round Mound of Rebound says Boston has too much talent, and should consider benching Brown for Aron Baynes, who scored eight points in 19 minutes off the bench.

“They got to play Aron Baynes more. That was my takeaway. There’s not enough balls to go around when they put that offense out there,” Barkley said. “Boston has a lot of talent, but Kyrie and Gordon (Hayward) didn’t play well tonight. I think it was 7-for-27. … I like the Celtics, but sometimes you can have too much talent. You can have a great player coming off the bench.”

When analyst Kenny Smith brought up the Warriors to rebut Barkley’s claim about the Celtics being too talented, Barkley said Golden State is different, because Draymond Green “does the dirty work.”

Barkley remains one of the most entertaining and cunning sports commentators around, but his seeming bias against the Celtics is odd. Dissing a team because it’s too talented is certainly a new one.

“I think they’re going to have some issues,” Barkley explained. “You can have too much talent.”
