NFL kicking Dave Portnoy out of Super Bowl gives him exactly what he wants

The NFL keeps giving David Portnoy exactly what he wants. Last week, they kicked him out of Media Night, allowing him to play the martyrdom card in a parade of TV interviews. Then on Sunday, security dragged Portnoy out of Mercedes Benz-Stadium.

Unsurprisingly, Portnoy, who was wearing a disguise, mocked the league in a video once he posted bail. The clip has garnered 16,000 retweets and 74,000 “likes” as of Monday afternoon. Barstool Sports Super Bowl coverage garnered more reach on Facebook than any other outlet as well.

“Barstool v. NFL” is one of the best things that’s ever happened to the Barstool brand. Portnoy can say he’s an enemy of Roger Goodell, just like his beloved Tom Brady and New England Patriots. And best of all, Barstool Sports can still claim to be an outsider, despite its $100 million valuation

If the NFL credentialed Portnoy, Barstool Sports wouldn’t have been a story last week. Deflategate was four years ago; Spygate was over 10 years ago. The animus between the Patriots and league office has cooled. Belichick was even posing for pictures next to Goodell at the Super Bowl MVP presentation Monday.

But Barstool is still at the height of its war with the Shield. Goodell’s pettiness just keeps giving Portnoy more content.
