David Ortiz as Bruins banner captain? Are you people serious?

Some people want David Ortiz to serve as the Bruins’ banner captain tonight from the ICU, because apparently they think he’s a cartoon character.

How deranged.

Ortiz is slowly beginning to recover from being shot Sunday in the lower back from close range, according to his wife, Tiffany. “Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps,” she said in a statement Wednesday. “Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps.”

That news prompted WBZ sports anchor Steve Burton to tweet we could be getting closer to having Ortiz wave the banner from his hospital bed. “Could we be getting closer to having @davidortiz as Game 7 #NHLBruins banner captain tonight from the hospital?  All in favor say ‘AYE’,” he wrote.

What a weird thought, right? But Burton is not alone. Dirty Water Media’s Steve Silva also floated the idea Wednesday, appearing to seriously ask whether Ortiz reached out to the Bruins about participating in the ceremony.

Silva made the same statement Monday morning, just hours after Ortiz had been shot. He wasn’t even cleared to be transported back to Boston yet.

Somebody named Samuel Greenberg from an outlet called WTP Sports beat Silva, tweeting out the banner captain suggestion Sunday night –– less than three hours after the shooting.

This thought is so stupid and shallow. Ortiz’s family has asked for privacy. Why in the world would Ortiz want cameras shoved into his face right now?

The world is bigger than sports –– a lot bigger. Let Ortiz recover without being part of some cheesy pregame production.
