Count Jalen Ramsey among those who needs to see more from Jimmy Garoppolo.

In a candid interview with GQ Magazine –– Ramsey runs down every quarterback in the league –– the boastful All-Pro says he wasn’t impressed with Garoppolo’s performance against the Jaguars last season. Though it was Jimmy G’s signature win, Ramsey says the 49ers QB was just following a good game plan from head coach Kyle Shanahan.

“When they beat us, his hype picked up,” Ramsey told Clay Skipper. “They were like, ‘He beat the number one defense.’ It was all schemes. He didn't beat us. It wasn't like he diced us up. It was literally all schemes.”

Garoppolo accounted for three touchdowns in the game, throwing two touchdown passes to tight end George Kittle and wideout Trent Taylor, while running for another. But Ramsey says Garoppolo wasn’t creating any opportunities himself.

“They were doing flat routes to the wide open fullback, and he's running for 20 yards down the field four times during the game... So he didn't really dice us up,” Ramsey remarked. It was their fullback and their tight end on over routes. But if you know how to work within your scheme then it means you're good. I guess you could say he's good.”

Ramsey is correct about the distribution of Garoppolo’s passes in that game. He completed eight passes to his backs, Kyle Juszczyk and Carlos Hyde, and three to Kittle, his tight end. But not every offense is receiver heavy. There are many games where Tom Brady, for example, primarily fixates on Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman in the slot and his running backs coming out of the back field.

Interestingly enough, Brady is one of a few quarterbacks who’s apparently earned Ramsey’s respect. Ramsey says Brady “doesn’t suck,” just like Aaron Rodgers.

Now that’s high praise.
