Johnny Manziel’s quest to return to the NFL hit a small roadblock this week. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner was hospitalized in Texas in Monday after taking a prescription drug. On Instagram, Manziel said he is fine.

"Thank you for your concern and kind messages. Unfortunately, I had a reaction to an increased dosage in Lithium which I take for my Bipolar disorder,” he posted, per ESPN. “It was a scary moment and I'm especially grateful for the staff at the hospital and all that they've done in the last 24 hours.”

The Patriots have been linked to Manziel this offseason, watching him workout in March at the University of San Diego. They also reportedly spoke to him before and after Texas A&M’s pro day.

With Brian Hoyer and seventh-round draft pick Danny Etling as the only quarterbacks on the roster, the Patriots still have room for another pass-thrower. But episodes like an overnight hospital stay, even if it wasn’t for a nefarious reason, indicate Manziel may still have some issues to sort out before an NFL team can rely on him again. Manziel, 25, has already said he would sign with a CFL team. That appears to be a more realistic path towards gridiron redemption.
