Kevin Durant insists he and Kyrie Irving didn’t plan to team up with each other in Brooklyn. The star forward says it just … happened. Apparently, the partnership was NBA free agency’s version of fate.

Listen to your team news NOW.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes, Durant explains his friendship with Irving, and how they didn’t intend to play together. Again, it just … happened. “I think the friendship part of the league has really grown, especially since LeBron James and Dwyane Wade became such great friends and ended up playing together,” he said. “People see friendship as the way guys are teaming up. There’s nothing wrong with people speculating. That’s just what it is, but we’re just good friends no matter what. We didn’t have to play together. It wasn’t necessary. But, we were friends before anything, and we just happened to want to hoop together. But it wasn’t a thing we planned. It just came together.”

Speculation about Durant and Irving teaming up spread over All-Star Weekend, when the two were conveniently filmed holding court outside of the locker room. It appeared as if Irving mouthed “two max deals” to Durant, which at the time was taken a sign they wanted to play for the Knicks.

James Dolan’s squad, of course, wound up missing out on every high-ticket free agent target, instead settling on the likes of Julius Randle and Bobby Portis.

Even if Irving didn’t explicitly decide to attach himself to Durant, it’s apparent the point guard wanted to leave Boston long before the season ended. General manager Danny Ainge says he possessed an inkling about the mercurial All-Star’s pending departure in March or April.

Earlier this summer, Durant and Irving reportedly met up in New York City after the former’s Achilles surgery to talk about their free agency plans. Maybe they were just catching up, as pals are wont to do.
