Bomani Jones says Bill Belichick pursued Eric Decker because he's white

Last year, ESPN’s Bomani Jones entered our lives when he insinuated Celtics fans cheered then-Jazz forward Gordon Hayward at T.D. Garden because Hayward is white, not because he was a pending free agent. On Wednesday, Jones was back at it, joking about Bill Belichick’s pursuit of wideout Eric Decker.

The Patriots reportedly signed Eric Decker Thursday, which makes sense, given the depleted state of their depth chart at wide receiver. The team placed Jordan Matthews on IR this week and Malcolm Mitchell is still battling knee problems.

But according to Jones, Decker’s skin color is one of the main draws for Belichick, who hosted the veteran for a workout Monday.

“Here’s my question on this: did Bill Belichick have a Google alert set for Eric Decker?,” Jones asked “High Noon” co-host Pablo Torre. “Or when this sort of thing happens, do they call the Lance Alworth Alliance to see what names they have on the list of guys that perhaps they could recommend? The Steve Largent Foundation is here to let them know there’s somebody else.”

Lance Alworth and Steve Largent, of course, are two Hall of Fame white wide receivers. Get it? Belichick calls them for when he’s looking for a receiver, because he prefers caucasian pass-catchers. Nobody tell Troy Brown, Deion Branch, Randy Moss or the seven black wideouts who are in Patriots camp right now.

Torre followed up Jones’ routine with some quips of his own. “Bill Belichick has a type. He is your friend that has a type,” Torre said. “I’m not saying Eric Decker is only desired because he fits the type. All I’m saying, is it is really, really funny when your friend who has a type walks in with someone who’s the type.”

Later in the conversation, Jones talked about how Belichick’s interest in white receivers might be due to a market inefficiency. Or maybe, you know, Belichick is just looking to recruit the best football players.

Jokes about Boston and race never get old.
