Report: Red Sox using 'back-channel efforts' to schedule meeting between Dennis Eckersley and David Price

An unapologetic David Price told reporters Saturday he will speak with Dennis Eckersley “face-to-face” about their month-old airplane confrontation. But apparently, no meeting between the two pitchers has been scheduled.

The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy reports there are currently no plans for Price and Eckersley to meet up, despite “back-channel efforts” by Red Sox officials. Price has not spoken with Eckersley since he berated him on the team plane in late June.

On Friday, Dustin Pedroia said Price would talk with Eckersley when the opportunity presents itself. “They’re going to have a conversation. We’re grown men here,” Pedroia told the press. “I’m not discipling my six year old son –– you know what I mean? These are people who really care about what they do. That’s it, man. They’ll have a conversation when they see each other. David’s a man. he’s going to do it face-to-face.”

Apparently, Price verbally assaulted Eckersley because the Hall of Fame hurler said “yuck” when Eduardo Rodriguez’s bad minor league pitching line was displayed on the NESN telecast June 29. When speaking about the incident Saturday, Price chastised Eckersley for not being in the clubhouse on a regular basis.

"If Eck was around, he’d know who we are,” Price said defiantly. “He’s never in the clubhouse. Mr. (Jerry) Remy is always in here. Dave O’Brien is always around. Mr. (Mike) Timlin, on the roadtrip, always in the clubhouse. He’s the one guy I’ve seen in my career that doesn’t ever show his face in the clubhouse. There’s a reason behind that.”

Eckersley wasn’t in the Red Sox clubhouse this weekend, either. Instead, he was in Cooperstown for this year’s Hall of Fame inductions.

He's scheduled to be back in the broadcast booth Thursday.
