'Two Outs' co-host and longtime WEEI contributor Steve Buckley reportedly going to The Athletic

It looks like longtime Boston Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley is moving to the digital world. The Boston Globe’s Chad Finn reports Buckley is heading to The Athletic Boston website, citing industry sources.

Buck, annoyingly, wouldn’t confirm the news to me in a text message. Perhaps that’s his revenge for spending so many hours with me inside of a radio studio.

Buckley has been a mainstay at the Herald since 1995, joining the once-fiery tabloid’s sports section after stints at ESPN and the National sports daily. He’s also been a regular contributor to WEEI since the early 1990s and currently hosts the “Two Outs” podcast with yours truly.

The Athletic launched its Boston vertical in April, hiring respected and well-established beat writers to cover all four local teams, including Jeff Howe (Patriots), Jen McCaffrey (Red Sox), Jay King (Celtics) and Fluto Shinzawa (Bruins). Ex-Boston Herald sports editor Sean Leahy oversees the website’s editorial operations.

With Buckley now presumably out the door, the Boston Herald is left without any general sports columnists. The newspaper has undergone the predictable downsizing cuts since it was purchased by Digital First Media earlier this year, and will soon move its offices to Braintree.
