USA Today predicts Patriots will go 16-0 this season

The Patriots couldn’t be facing higher expectations this season. The Super Bowl champions loaded up this offseason, adding wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore to their star-studded roster. The only similarly active free agency period was in 2007, when the Patriots acquired Randy Moss, Wes Welker and several other veteran pieces on their way to an undefeated regular season.

With NFL training camps beginning this week –– the Patriots start on Thursday –– national publications are releasing their season predictions. USA Today writer Nate Scott unveiled his picks Monday, and thinks the Patriots will go 16-0 for the second time in 10 years.

“Is it bold? Sure. Kinda. But it's not like Tom Brady hasn't gone 16-0 before,” Scott writes. “And from the FWIW department, Brady went 14-1 last season and appears to be surrounded by an even better cast now, especially if Rob Gronkowski is, in fact, back to 100%.”

The Patriots will also likely be aided this season by a particularly weak AFC East. The division is a tumultuous state, with the Jets rebuilding and the Bills playing under their fifth head coach since 2010.

Much like the 2007 squad, Scott predicts the 2017 Patriots will reach the Super Bowl. Except this time, he thinks they’ll win it, ousting the Packers.
