The ever-positive Tom Brady had no problem lauding the Patriots impressive defense Monday morning on The Greg Hill Show on WEEI as playing the best of any he’s teamed up with over the years.

Not surprisingly, the ever-pragmatic Bill Belichick wasn’t quite as ready to anoint the unit that’s not yet allowed more than a single touchdown in any game this season and through five weeks is on pace for some truly historic numbers.

“I’m not really thinking about ranking anything,” Belichick said on his morning conference call with the local media. “I don’t really care about some defense five years ago, 10 years ago or 15 years ago. I mean, I don’t think any of that’s very relevant. What’s relevant to me is getting ready for the Giants and correcting the things that happened in the Washington game that we need to fix, both on a coaching level and a playing level, game planning, and getting ready to play the Giants. That’s really what I’m worried about, not some defense from 10 years ago. I mean, I don’t really care about that right now to be honest with you.”

That response came after Belichick was asked about Brady’s praise for the defense.

“I’m not going to argue with Tom on that one,” Belichick said. “If that’s his opinion, I wouldn’t argue with him on that. If that’s the way he feels, then great.”

Great may indeed be the way the Patriots experienced, versatile, talented, productive defense is described when all is said and done this season, but it’s probably no surprise Belichick wasn’t ready to go down that road just yet, a mere five games into the schedule.
