Rival cornerback hopes Tom Brady leaves Patriots, sort of

Thanks to his role as the key cog in the back end of the Buffalo defense, All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White has gotten to see Tom Brady twice a season for each of his first three years in the NFL.

Listen to your team news NOW.

As such, the guy who replaced Stephon Gilmore as the Bills’ No. 1 cover man has pretty good perspective on what Brady still brings to the field and what he means to the Patriots.

That’s why White made it clear in comments to The Athletic that he would prefer to not play Brady twice a year anymore…although he made sure to put those comments in perspective.

“It’s definitely a big deal because he’s been doing it at a high level for that team for a while,” White told The Athletic of Brady’s impending free agency. “For me, I hope he doesn’t go back (to New England). For football, it’d be great to see him stay a Patriot and continue to do it that way.”

Oh, and that idea that Brady has fallen off some cliff or lost some juice to his game given his fading production as he approaches the age of 43 this summer? White certainly doesn’t see it that way.

“There’s never a fall-off with Brady,” White told The Athletic. “He’s everything. I think people are so used to him – his standard is set so high that whenever he is a little half under that, they think it’s an off year and they’re panicking. People don’t understand the league changes every year. People change. Stuff changes. Every year is not going to be 100 percent. You can be 97 percent, but that is great. His 97 percent is better than everybody else in the league. He is still the best. Anytime you’ve got to go against him, I guarantee a lot of guys are panicking.”

There you have it, from the mouth of the best defensive player on the second-best team in the AFC East.

Brady leaving New England would probably be good news for White and the Bills, but also a bad blow for New England and the NFL as a whole.
