As part of the performance, Gronk jumped off a platform and claimed WWE’s 24/7 title.

But according to a report from, Gronkowski wasn’t too sure he wanted to take part in the wrestling stunt.

In fact, 74-year-old WWE patriarch Vince McMahon apparently had to perform the stunt in rehearsals first before the 30-year-old Gronkowski would give it a shot.

“After our original story ran, a WWE name contacted us and said that Gronk was ‘terrified’ of the dive, and that he had the benefit of a dozen of the biggest NXT guys catching him,” reported. “Even after Vince McMahon did the spot, it took a significant amount of time to convince Gronkowski. The low angle you saw on TV was because production had to make it look better as Gronk bent his knees and practically fell off the platform ‘like a toddler jumping into the pool for the first time.’”

McMahon, known for his swagger inside and outside of the ring – his second attempt at the XFL, a startup football league, failed this spring – even apparently dismissed the danger for the future Hall of Fame tight end when he pulled off the practice run.

“One person in the building said those there caught it and had a reaction of ‘did that just happen?,’ and that Vince McMahon said something to the nature of ‘not so bad, is it?’” wrote
