Jayson Tatum lands on Bleacher Report's 'overhyped' list
After averaging 18.5 points per game in the playoffs and almost leading a depleted Celtics squad, Jayson Tatum proved to be one of the best young players in the NBA. Despite his proficient offensive abilities, Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report crowned the young superstar the NBA's most overhyped player.
Hughes before has acknowledged Tatum's fantastic potential, dubbing him a "franchise player".
While Hughes isn't denying Tatum's potential or ability, he points to small sample sizes, opportunistic shooting and star players returning as a reason that the Duke product might not reach the aloft goals set for him this season.
"Tatum's hot shooting and relatively brief playoff excellence still count in his favor, but he's only 20," writes Hughes. "It's way too early to start taking the Kobe Bryant parallels seriously, even if some of the evidence is compelling. Tatum's going to be great. But let's not rush to anoint him as a superstar until he deserves it."
Tatum, alongside Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Jaylen Brown, and Al Horford, forms one of the NBA's elite lineups. Bench contributors Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Marcus Morris, and Aron Baynes help the Celtics boast one of the deepest, most talented lineups in the league.
The Celtics are the favorites to emerge from the Eastern Conference, in part due to Tatum's tenacious scoring ability.
