According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Major League Baseball decided on Thursday to adopt more extensive use of instant replay, which would include three managers' challenges. The revamped approach to replays will begin next season. Managers will be allowed three challenges per game, one of which can be used in the first six innings, the other two of which can be used beginning in the seventh inning through the rest of the game. Successful challenges will not count against a manager's challenge count, meaning they can conceivably challenge more than three calls per game. Even if a manager uses his three challenges, umpires can still use replay to review home runs, as they do now. Nightengale notes that men with umpiring experience will man the replay operations from the league's offices in New York and will make the final determination on calls, a responsibility that currently belongs to the crew chief.
