Dombrowski: Rangers reluctant to part with remaining catchers

LAS VEGAS--Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski suggested that conversations with the Rangers about catchers quickly became focused on Gerald Laird because the Rangers were inclined to keep higher-ceiling options Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden. The Tigers acquired Laird in exchange for a pair of minor-league pitchers. "We asked about (Saltalamacchia and Teagarden), but it was apparent they wanted to keep the other guys,'€ said Dombrowski. '€œIt was apparent in our conversations that the one guy, even though they liked him, that they wanted to talk about was Laird. We were happy to do that, so we focused on him.'€ This opinion is in line with the assessment of an official familiar with the Rangers' thinking, who suggested that Texas planned to trade just one catcher this winter, and would have to be overwhelmed to deal either Saltalamacchia or Teagarden.
