The Bruins announced Thursday evening that Ryan Donato has been assigned to the Providence Bruins of the AHL. The 22-year-old has yet to see time on the Providence roster as he made the immediate jump from college hockey to the NHL.

The highly talented centerman, currently being used as a winger for the Bruins, has one goal in 11 appearances for Boston this season. After Harvard finished up the 2017-18 season, Donato appeared in 12 regular-season games for the B’s, racking up five goals and four assist for nine points. He also appeared in three postseason games for the B’s last season.

The Massachusetts native will benefit from spending time in the minors.

The move comes after the Bruins announced that David Backes is healthy enough to play.

With the Bruins still shuffling the bottom three lines, Donato could be back in Boston within one, maybe two weeks.
