Friday’s Red Sox-Athletics matchups: Wade Miley vs. Scott Kazmir

June 05, 2015 - 4:43 am

After blowing a 4-0 lead and dropping an 8-4 decision to the Twins on Thursday afternoon, the Red Sox will turn the page and host the A's for a three-game weekend series. Boston will send Wade Miley out to pitch opposite fellow left-hander Scott Kazmir in the first game. Miley's latest trip to the mound did not quite yield the same results he had churned out in his previous three outings. The lefty had strung together a trio of starts in which he allowed just three total earned runs over 19 2/3 innings. Most recently, however, Miley reverted back to some of his early season struggles, pitching just four innings against the Rangers on Saturday and surrendering six runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks. The result dipped his season record below .500 at 4-5 and boosted his ERA up to 4.97. "I really didn't execute pitches," Miley said after the game. "I didn't have command with anything. I was falling behind, and that's going to happen when you fall behind." One of Miley's wins this year came as his first career start against the A's on May 13. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, holding Oakland scoreless on five hits, four walks a strikeout. With Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara helping out their starter in finishing a combined shutout, the Red Sox were able to come away with a 2-0 win. The Athletics hit just .208 off Miley and slugged at a .333 clip as he conceded a double and a triple in his outing. Kazmir, on the other hand, is a little more seasoned against his opponent, recording 28 starts vs. the Red Sox with a 9-8 record through 157 2/3 innings. He has a 3.94 ERA overall opposing the Sox, and it improves just marginally to 3.89 when facing Boston at Fenway Park. With Kazmir on the hill, the Red Sox have posted a slash line of .243/.343/.397, registering 144 hits in 592 at-bats and drawing 84 walks to 160 strikeouts. Of those hits, 36 have been doubles, two were triples and 17 went for home runs. In total, Kazmir has allowed the Sox 69 earned runs and has a 1.446 WHIP against them. Friday's start is Kazmir's first since May 27 when he finished his day vs. the Tigers early, completing just three scoreless and hitless innings before experiencing shoulder tightness. The left-hander missed a start, but told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was pain-free after a 30-pitch bullpen session Sunday. "It was a little bit of relief how great everything felt after just a couple of days of rest," Kazmir said. Kazmir has an impressive 2.93 ERA this season, though he has just a 2-3 record to show for it. After beginning strong with back-to-back wins in his first two starts, Kazmir has not been awarded a win in any outing since, grabbing five no-decisions and three losses, two of which came in his last three appearances. Six of Kazmir's 10 starts have been quality caliber, and batters are slashing .220/.305/.364 against him. His WHIP is 1.23.
