In the opening game of the three-game series against the Rays on Friday night, the Red Sox will give Sean O'Sullivan the start against 27-year-old right-hander Chris Archer. The 28-year-old O'Sullivan is 2-0 with a 6.61 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in four games this season. He was called up to Boston from Pawtucket on July 3 to try to fill the fifth spot in the Red Sox rotation. This will be O'Sullivan's second start since being promoted, as he got the win in a 10-5 victory over the Angels on Sunday. He let up two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out two and walking three. "I knew it was going to be important to put up some zeros early, to give our offense a chance to get on the board first," O'Sullivan said. "After that all I could do was stay within myself and try not to put too much pressure on it." The six-year veteran is 0-0 with a 5.06 ERA in two career starts vs. the Rays. His last game against Tampa Bay came on Oct. 3, 2010, as a member of the Angels. O'Sullivan held the Rays scoreless, letting up only two hits in six innings, although Tampa went on to a 3-2 victory. Archer takes the mound Friday with a 4-11 record and the most losses in the American League. He has a 4.50 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP and 127 strikeouts, good for second in the AL. He will be looking for his first win since June 6, as he is 0-4 in the five starts since then. His most recent outing was the no-decision, which came in a 5-1 loss to the Tigers on Sunday. He held Detroit scoreless on three hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 batters and walking three. "Can't help but feel really good about what Chris Archer did today," Rays manager Kevin Cash said after that game. "For the way it started, and the way he kicked it in gear and kind of showed us the Archer that we know he's very capable of being. That was an outstanding effort, outstanding performance." In 13 career starts against the Red Sox, Archer is 1-8 with a 5.67 ERA. He started vs. Boston in an 8-2 Red Sox win on June 28. Archer gave up four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine and walking four. Rays vs. O'Sullivan (RHP) Evan Longoria is 1-for-2 with 1 double, 1 RBI and 1 walk. Corey Dickerson is 0-for-1. No other Rays batters have faced O'Sullivan.
