Al Horford will need to decide whether to accept $30.1 million and play for the Celtics for at least one more season, or opt-out and become a free agent by Tuesday. Though if both Horford and the Celtics agree, this deadline can be moved back, with the absolute latest date being June 29.

As of Saturday, Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reported that Horford had yet to decide whether to opt-in or opt-out. Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald reports that the 33-year-old and the Celtics have talked about a new contract option if he were to opt-out.

“Horford has until Tuesday to opt in to $30,123,015 for next season, but the sides have been discussing a plan where he comes in at a lower number next season and gets two more years tacked on in a new deal,” Bulpett wrote. “It’s not known whether the way things have played out over the last couple of weeks will have an effect on Horford’s outlook.”

The latest developments that may have impacted Horford’s outlook include the Celtics being unwilling to give up Jayson Tatum in the Anthony Davis trades, influencing Davis’s decision to go to the Los Angeles Lakers. Another factor is the Kyrie Irving situation, in which there are multiple reports that Irving could still play with Davis next season, or head to Brooklyn.

While Davis and Irving were considered to have been some of the biggest factors for the Celtics this summer, the decision regarding Horford is expected to largely influence the direction of the team as well.

As the oldest member of the Celtics, the center brings 11 years of experience to a team that has an average age of about 26, featuring Jaylen Brown (22) and Jayson Tatum (21) on the opposite end of the scale. Horford still seemed to make a significant impact for the Celtics starting all 68 games he played in last season, averaging 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
