Larry Bird wasn't going to stay in an appropriate 33rd place on the NBA's all-time scoring list forever. Not with Kevin Durant still in his prime.

The Warriors star overtook Bird with 21 points on Monday night and then said he was, "giddy like a little kid" after someone texted to tell him whom he had passed.

"I grew up watching Larry Bird -- well not really, he's older -- but you know what I mean?" Durant, who was 3 when Bird retired in 1992, told reporters. "Knowing the legend of Larry Legend, to be amongst the greats, that's all you really want to do. That's a great accomplishment, but I've got to keep going."

Durant now has 21,806 points for his career, surpassing Bird's 21,791. Next on the list is another former Celtic: Gary Payton, with 21,813 points.

By the way, appearing on ESPN, former NBA guard Jalen Rose, who played for Bird in Indiana, said he'd still take him over Durant.

"He's the only guy that won three straight MVPs in a league where Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were present," Rose noted.
