The Red Sox usually make a big show of unfurling banners. The first look anyone got at flag commemorating their soon-to-be 2018 AL East championship, however, was on the side of the McGrath O'Brien Highway.

According to Fox25, three friends from Malden were driving on Rt. 28 in Somerville when they noticed a package in the road. Believing it potentially to be jerseys, they stopped to scoop it up, but not before it had been run over.

When they opened it, they found a surprise -- a giant banner emblazoned with "2018 American League East Champions" and a Red Sox logo.

"We thought it was jerseys or something like that," one of the men, Randy Baldassari, told the station. "That's what it look like, and when we unraveled it and seen what it was, we knew it was something big."

The Red Sox acknowledged that the banner had fallen of the truck delivering it to Fenway Park, and the three men said they'd return it to the team. The Red Sox can clinch the division as soon as Wednesday night with a win in New York.
