The Red Sox have placed reliever Bobby Poyner on the 10-day disabled list with a hamstring strain and recalled reliever Marcus Walden from Pawtucket.

Poyner was injured in Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Yankees. The training staff checked on him at the start of an inning when he had trouble getting loose, but he remained in the game.

The 25-year-old had been one of the feel-good stories of camp, a 14th-round pick who made the team despite not pitching above Double-A. He went 1-0 and allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings with Boston.

Walden, meanwhile, represented a nice story of his own. The 29-year-old made his first Opening Day roster and allowed two runs in five innings before being sent to the minors.

The Red Sox need depth after asking for eight innings out of the bullpen on Wednesday following David Price's departure after just one inning.
