Report: Red Sox not a match for Manny Machado at this time

Manny Machado isn't a fit for the Red Sox at the moment.

That's the take of The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal in his latest notes column:

The Boston Red Sox are among the clubs to contact the Orioles about Manny Machado, but president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski concluded the teams likely do not match up on a trade at this time, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.

Rosenthal goes on to note that it's unclear what the Orioles want in return for their slugging free-agent-to-be. It's unlikely the Red Sox would trade the next five years of third baseman Rafael Devers, who homered on Sunday, for four months of Machado.

Otherwise, there's not much to offer. The Red Sox farm system ranks 24th out of 30 in Major League Baseball, and top prospects Michael Chavis (80-game PEDs suspension) and Jay Groome (Tommy John surgery) are currently sidelined.
