Sergio Romo won't be joining the Red Sox bullpen this month.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred, the Tampa Bay Rays likely pulled back the reliever after he was claimed on trade waivers. It's unlikely the sidewinding closer would've reached the Red Sox without being claimed by a rival contender first, though because he's an American League pitcher, the Red Sox would've had a shot at him before any NL club.

Romo, who spent the first nine years of his career in San Francisco, has pitched in Tampa for parts of the last two. He's 3-3 with a 3.30 ERA and 18 saves this season. He has struck out 63 in 57 1/3 innings.

The 35-year-old would've appealed to the Red Sox because of his postseason experience. He won three World Series with the Giants without allowing a run in six appearances. Overall, he owns a 3.09 postseason ERA.
