Former Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Friday's Game 1 of the American League Division Series as part of a night to raise money for Hurricane Florence relief efforts in the Carolinas.

A North Carolina native and a current resident of storm-ravaged Wilmington, Nixon spent parts of 10 seasons in Boston after being drafted seventh overall in 1993 out of New Hanover High School. He hit .278 with 133 homers in Boston and was a part of the 2004 World Series championship team.

He'll be leading efforts on Friday to collect money at every gate to help those impacted by last month's storms, which dumped record amounts of rain on North Carolina. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.
