The Red Sox and Braves just announced a deal that will bring outfielder Mark Kotsay to the Red Sox in exchange for 20-year-old outfielder Luis Sumoza of the Short-Season Single-A Lowell Spinners. Kotsay will give the Sox outfield depth while J.D. Drew is on the disabled list. The Sox may choose to have Kotsay fortify theirlineup against right-handed pitchers, against whom the left-handed hitting Kotsay is hitting .305/.361/.457/.818. Switch-hitting centerfielder Coco Crisp, who seems most likely to be affected by the Kotsay acquisition, .253/.331/.364/.695 against right-handers and .289/.300/.487/.787 against southpaws. Sumoza, after spending the last two years in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, has enjoyed notable improvement for Lowell this year. He is hitting .301/.366/.549/.915 with a team-leading 11 homers for the Spinners.
