Minihane: Red Sox passion not near heights it once was

There's been much discussion over the last couple of years about how to improve the game of baseball and make it more appealing for kids. With baseball's audience increasingly growing older, and Major League Baseball's seeming inability to market its stars, there's concern about baseball's ability to reach today's youth going forward.

Gerry Callahan returned to Kirk & Callahan Tuesday morning, and disagreed with co-host Kirk Minihane's take on Dan Shaughnessy's column in the Boston Globe, which details how baseball is less appealing today despite the Red Sox torrid, and historic, pace.

"People go to games; the TV ratings are good," Minihane said. "But the passion, and I think you would agree, if the Red Sox and Yankees were having this kind of a race 15 years ago, it’s all we would talk about."

“That is a real problem for a sport that used to dominate when I was a kid and when you were a kid," Callahan said.

"I think it’s not salvageable. Baseball is going to become what boxing was," Minihane said. "It’s already starting that way."

The focus of the conversation shifted to how baseball impacts kids today. Both Minihane and Callahan recently attended Fenway Park, and had different interpretations as to how kids took in the game.

“Kids don’t like to go to baseball games for four hours," Minihane said. "They by and large do not. My kids and their friends, they don’t go."

“When you go to games, there’s real interest," Callahan replied. "Kids like baseball. It’s an event. Society now, people like events."

Minihane disagreed.

“I don’t find that at all when I go to Fenway. We were at Fenway a few weeks ago, you felt there was tension in the air? I see kids who want to leave in the fourth inning who are bored. That’s what I see."

Per Baseball Reference, Red Sox attendance is down but only slightly. At this point in 2017, Boston had 988 more fans per game, which ranks 17th best in the MLB.
