Don Cherry has been fired by Sportsnet after making discriminatory comments during a broadcast on Saturday. Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun was the first to report the firing, and Sportsnet has since confirmed it.

During his weekly segment as part of Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry said he is seeing fewer and fewer people wearing poppy flowers to honor fallen Canadian soldiers, while singling out those he believes are immigrants in Toronto.

The response was swift online, with many calling for Cherry’s firing.

“You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

Sportsnet apologized for the comments but there was no apology from Cherry himself at the time of his firing.
