-- Olympic gold medal gymnast and Needham native Aly Raisman and former NFL tight end Colton Underwood have broken up, Underwood revealed recently.

“We’re taking a break right now,” Underwood said. “We’re still good friends and talk, but all that travel had been a nightmare.”

The relationship began six months ago when Underwood asked Raisman out during a live video Q&A.

“Yeah, I would go on a date with him,” Raisman said after watching the video.

They made their red carpet debut at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year in December and went on to attend other events together, like the Golden Globes.

The two split amicably and distance was a big factor in the decision. Underwood trains in Colorado while Raisman resides in Massachusetts.

“It ended fine,” Underwood said. “We’re in a good place.”

-- Michael Phelps was on hand during the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday and followed his friend Jordan Spieth for all 18 holes.

This is the only major championship Spieth needs to complete the career Grand Slam.

Spieth said he was glad to have the 23-time Olympic gold medalist there for moral support.

“He’s become a good friend and even a mentor,” Spieth said. “That’s pretty awesome to have a mentor like that.”

Phelps said he wanted to give Spieth advice during the round but kept his mouth shut.

“For me, whenever I had something bad happen, I used it for motivation,’’ Phelps said. “That was something I wanted to say [to Spieth>, but I don’t want to step over that boundary.’’

Phelps and Spieth recently spent time together in Cabo San Lucas and dined together so Spieth could get tips from Phelps “about mental approach and preparation stuff.’’

“He’s a very special breed in this sport and he’s got a long career ahead of him,’’ Phelps said. “It’ll be fun to watch where he takes it and what he does.’’

Other celebrities in attendance at the championship in Charlotte, North Carolina include Justin Bieber and Darius Rucker.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I go out the same way every day, since I’ve gotten here, since I’ve started playing football. I love doing this. I love getting out there with the guys. I wish we would have pulled out the W tonight, but I think there was a lot of good things, some things to improve on, and we’ll work on those going forward." -- Jimmy Garoppolo, after starting the Patriots’ first preseason game
