Rob Gronkowski made his first public appearance in Boston on Saturday night since announcing his retirement last month.

The occasion was the 2019 Make-A-Wish Foundation gala at the InterContinental Boston, where Gronkowski was honored with the Wish Hero Award.

The former Patriot was there with his girlfriend, Camille Kostek, and, as Gronk is wont to do, cracked some jokes during his acceptance speech.

While recalling a visit to Boston Children’s Hospital for his first community event as a Patriot, Gronkowski said, “It was an eye-opening experience to see what the children were going through, yet they all still managed to smile when my teammates and I came into the room. And I’m sorry, Camille, the moms got a little bit frisky, too, when I walked in.”

He then made a joke about Tom Brady.

“Midway through my first season, the Make-A-Wish Foundation came to Gillette Stadium with a couple of kids who wanted to meet … Tom Brady,” he joked, rolling his eyes. “As soon as the kids saw Tom, their faces lit up, which how could you not when looking at the beautiful Tom?”

One of the items up for auction at the event was four tickets to the Red Sox’ home opener on Tuesday. During the bidding for this item, Gronkowski shouted, “I’ll be there!”
