Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was set to miss the game against the Washington Capitals at TD Garden on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said Bergeron was uncomfortable during the Bruins’ win at Toronto on Friday.

"If it wasn’t a back-to=back, we’d hope he’d play the next game. ... So he gets the day off. I think they call it in Canada, [with> the Raptors, 'load management.' So maybe we’ll label it as that for now,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy refused to say anything else about the injury. But Bergeron was bothered throughout the offseason by a groin injury he suffered during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He had a PRP shot in August and worked into training camp slowly before making his debut in the preseason in the Bruins’ last exhibition game.

He had not missed a regular-season game before Saturday.

Paul Carey was called up from Providence of the AHL to take Bergeron’s spot in the lineup.
