Zdeno Chara to miss Bruins game vs. Capitals because of jaw surgery

What could be a greater challenge for the Bruins than facing the Washington Capitals, who have won 16 of the past 17 games against Boston?

How about taking on Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and the Capitals without Zdeno Chara?

Well, the Bruins are going to find out how that goes Monday because Chara is having a procedure done to treat an infection in the area where he had surgery on his jaw last summer. Chara famously had his jaw fractured by a puck during Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against St. Louis and played through the pain until after the Bruins lost Game 7.

“I didn’t have fever. Obviously it was sensitive when I got it first, for a number of days,” Chara said about the infection after practice Sunday at TD Garden. “But we treated it, calmed it down and now it’s just basically at that point where I think it’s stable but we want to avoid the further possible repeat infection, so we have to treat it.”

In announcing Chara’s scheduled absence, coach Bruce Cassidy said that the Boston captain is expected to return to the lineup Friday at Buffalo after the Bruins and the NHL a three-day Christmas break. John Moore, a healthy scratch the past two games, will replace Chara in the Bruins lineup.

Chara described the procedure as one that’ll take out the screws and plates that were insert into his jaw over the summer. He expects to be sore during Christmas. Finding the right time to do the procedure, though, was difficult.

“Yeah, but it’s never going to be I guess perfect. Tried to plan this and obviously we tried to make that decision ahead of time, and that’s what it is,” Chara said. “We tried to take advantage of that little break we have coming up so it’s too demanding I guess on the body. But yeah it just worked out to be the last game before the Christmas break.”
