Grim news came out of the Syracuse basketball world overnight. According to, longtime Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man with his car on Interstate 690 around midnight. Authorities say the victim was a 51-year-old man by the name of Jorge Jimenez.

Jimenez's car, which had four other passengers in it, had crashed into a guardrail for unknown reasons. Jimenez got out of his vehicle at some point and was reportedly walking along the highway near his car when he was struck by Boeheim.

Authorities say Boeheim had no alcohol in his system at the time of the accident and that no traffic tickets have been issued as of Thursday morning. Driving conditions were reportedly icy in spots in the Syracuse area Wednesday night, but it's unclear if that played any role in the accident.

Boeheim, 74, has been the head coach of the Syracuse Orange men's basketball program since 1976. The Orange are currently 18-8 and sit in fourth place in the ACC. They beat Louisville at the Carrier Dome earlier Wednesday night.
