Thursday's Mashup: Tua vs. Stidham Week 1?

Happy Thursday! The sun is still shining! The weekend is on the horizon! So are live sports, we think! Here are some news items, noteworthy somethings and nuggets of interest to get you ready for today.

2003: Ohio State vs. Miami (Fiesta Bowl) - ESPN, 7 p.m.

Great College Football Game Alert! Enjoy a re-airing of the 2002 BCS Championship, where Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee (avert your eyes on the injury) are shocked for the title by Jim Tressel, his sweater vest and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

According to Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, word is there's growing sentiment in NFL circles that Tua Tagovailoa, the #5 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, will beat out incumbent starter, and recent Patriots dream killer, Ryan Fitzpatrick, for the Miami Dolphins starting gig sooner than expected. Possible by WEEK 1. Which could set up a Tua vs. Stidham showdown to kick off what likely will be the weirdest NFL season in decades. Some may gripe, "I was hoping it would be FitzMagic so the Pats could get revenge for that gut-punch Week 17 loss last season." After all, that shocking loss derailed the Pats bye week, which sent them to the Wild Card, and an early exit, then remember. But hey, if it's Tua's time then who could argue with an SEC via the AFC East battle in Foxboro? Count me as a fan of either option, or football happening, or any live sports. But Tua vs. Stiddy would be a hell of a way to kick off the post-GOAT Era. And no, with all due respect to Ninko, who said Hoyer the Destroyer could get the Week One call, the bid is in for Stid the Kid.

Every team wants to find their next great starter, like the Dolphins and Pats. And they could only hope that they deliver maybe 70-80% of what Patrick Mahomes has brought to Kansas City the last two seasons. And while their impact and evolution remains to be seen, what we're calling "The Mahomes Effect" can clearly be seen on fields all over the country, and at every level. If kids can make throws like this then given what Mahomes has pulled off time and again then don't they deserve some consideration or at least a second look? Welcome to the NFL's New QB Normal.

... and he made this. Seriously, this is amazing. The quarantine contraptions and isolation innovations have been amazing. But this could be the backyard Rube Goldberg/Mousetrap of the century.

Remember this game like it was yesterday, just thirty five years prior? Probably not. If you remember the 1985 Finals at all you probably remember the Celtics losing in six, the Lkers getting revenge after an epic seven game 1984 Finals. But in Game One it was of all players the living legend Scott Wedman who did the damage. Like in Game Two of the 2008 Finals when Leon Powe went off. Gotta love those random risings of championships heroes. Except David Tyree.
