The Red Sox enter this three-game set with the Twins 5.5 games behind the Indians for the second Wild Card spot. Also, the A’s only trail Cleveland by one game. Even though Boston has won 11 of its last 15, a lot will have to go wrong for everyone else in order for the Red Sox to sneak in by the time they finish up this 25-game stretch.

Alex Cora knows this. But there’s enough of a chance for him to have faith.

“Well, we have an 8% chance, so I mean, like ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ there’s still a chance, I guess. At least in my eyes,” he said. “You control two things: the way you play and the Rays because we play four games (against them). You don’t control the Indians, you don’t control the A’s. That’s out of the equation. Although we started controlling the Indians when we beat them two out of three.

“That’s all we can do. Just keep playing good baseball, win games and make that series count in September. Hopefully, by that time, we’re already past one of the other two teams. And if that happens, then the last week in September is going to be fun. We go to Texas, we play Baltimore … But it’s easy to say. I could map it out and can give you a lot of reasons that we can do this, but, obviously, over the course of this season I’ve been trying to give reasons to believe in us and it hasn't happened on the field. So, we just got to take care of today.”
