Prior to Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox placed Chris Sale on the 10-day Injured List with left elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to August 14 (Wednesday).

Dave Dombrowski addressed the media after the team’s announcement and did not seem optimistic about the situation. When asked if Sale will pitch again this season he said, “I don’t know.”

According to Dombrowski, this issue arose on Wednesday, the day after Sale's last start. His elbow has not been a problem throughout the season.

Sale felt stiffness in his elbow, which was reflected in the MRI, according to Dombrowski. Dr. James Andrews will be consulted on the matter.

Ryan Brasier was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Sale’s spot on the roster.

Brasier has not pitched for the Red Sox since July 15. In his 44 appearances for Boston this year, Brasier has a 4.46 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Brasier has thrown in 10 games for the PawSox this season, posting a 0.96 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP in the process.
