Red Sox promote Oscar Hernandez with Sandy Leon placed on paternity leave list
Prior to Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros, the Red Sox announced Sandy Leon has been moved to the paternity leave list. In place of Leon, the Red Sox selected right-handed hitting catcher Oscar Hernandez from Triple-A Pawtucket, who will wear No. 77.
Hernandez last played at the Major League level in 2016 with the Diamondbacks. In his 22 big league games between 2015 and 2016, Hernandez has hit .167 with one double and one home run. Hernandez has played 16 games between Pawtucket (nine) and Double-A Portland (seven) this season and hit .111 with one home run.
Hernandez was not on Boston’s 40-man roster prior to the move. To make room, the Red Sox elected to designate right-handed pitcher Chandler Shepherd for assignment.
Shepherd has a 10.01 ERA over eight appearances (seven starts) with Pawtucket in 2019, along with a 2.33 WHIP and 30 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings.
