Dr. James Andrews has given the Red Sox some hope when it comes to Chris Sale’s elbow.

Listen to your team news NOW.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Andrews confirmed the inflammation in Sale’s elbow on Monday, but Sale is expected to avoid Tommy John surgery.

The Red Sox placed Sale on the 10-day Injured List on Saturday, retroactive to Wednesday, August 14, the day Sale first felt stiffness in his elbow.

Dave Dombrowski provided an update on Sale's situation after the initial report. He made no mention of surgery, though he did note Sale received a "platelet-rich plasma injection." Andrews also recommended "a period of shutdown from throwing."

"Sale will be re-evaluated in six weeks by Dr. Andrews,” Dombrowski added.
