Once Sale arrived at the Red Sox spring training facility — which was delayed because he had a “mild case” of pneumonia — he explained how elbow surgery was never an option for him last season despite the problems he had with his arm. He eventually threw in Fort Myers, but by the time March 19 rolled around, it had been decided Sale needed to undergo Tommy John surgery, as well.

And now the Mets are losing one of their top-end starters. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Noah Syndergaard will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network is reporting the Mets righty will have surgery on Thursday, so Sale could have his procedure done soon, as well.
