Red Sox lineup: Jonny Gomes in left field, Jarrod Saltalamacchia catching

July 30, 2013 - 12:16 pm

The Red Sox will face yet another left-handed pitcher on Tuesday night. They've been stymied by Rays ace David Price twice over the past week and have struggled versus lefty arms all season, hitting .247 as a team as opposed to their .285 batting average against right-handed pitchers. The Red Sox will load up their lineup with right handed bats, with Jonny Gomes getting the start in left field. Gomes is hitting just .214 against lefties, but has a slugging percentage of .427, including five home runs. Switch-hitting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will also return behind the plate for the Sox. Saltalamacchia was given the day off Monday after catching every game against the Orioles this past weekend. Brandon Workman (0-1, 4.40) who made his major league debut against the Mariners in early July will take the mound for the Sox. Workman was strong is his last outing, lasting six innings while giving up just two runs on sevens hits, but eventually taking the loss. Joe Saunders (9-9, 4.48) will face off against Workman. Saunders has been solid for the Mariners this season, but has been successful pitching at Fenway Park over his career. In five starts, Saunders is 3-1 with a 4.60 ERA.
