David Ortiz sits Thursday against Mike Minor and the Braves due to a sore right calf. A.J. Pierzynski will take hits spot as the designated hitter and will hit cleanup. Ryan Lavarnway makes his first major league start at first base on Thursday after coming in as a replacement during Wednesday night's contest. David Ross does the catching for Jake Peavy. With Ross behind the plate in 2014, Peavy has a 3.86 ERA with a 1.89 strikeout to walk ratio. Opponents are also hitting .209 against Peavy with Ross behind the plate.
