With their second-round pick (No. 67 overall) and third (and final) pick of the first night of the draft, the Red Sox selected Sam Travis, a first baseman out of Indiana University. Travis hit .347/.415/.576 in 59 games as a junior with 12 homers and 30 extra-base hits. He spent his entire college career as a masher, hitting .327/.410/.544 over his three seasons with 31 homers in 184 games. Travis, 20 (born on Aug. 27, 1993), played much of the 2013 season with a broken hamate, still managing to hit .316/.419/.545 with 10 homers despite the limitation. He then played for Team USA, hitting .222/.306/.315 in international competition. The pick was announced by Derek Lowe.
