PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- ESPN might be delaying Dustin Pedroia's debut.

According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora the second baseman will kick off his Grapefruit League season either Thursday at JetBlue Park or Friday when the Sox head to Sarasota to play the Orioles. Why the uncertainty? Blame the presence of national television.

"I saw that he hit a home run, straight center," said Cora of Pedroia's workout back at JetBlue Park Monday morning. "We might shoot for Thursday. I might go Friday, and this is honest, Thursday is national TV and all this stuff is going on so I would rather wait. It's still news, we know it, whenever he plays. But I would rather do it with our local guys than the whole national stuff."

When reminded Friday is an hour bus ride, Cora responded, "That's OK. If he wants to play ..."

It will be Pedroia's first spring training action in two years while marking his initial game action since shutting it down for the 2018 season on May 19 after playing in just three games due to his right knee injury.
