The Red Sox will need a new second baseman for at least the time being.

The team announced Dustin Pedroia is headed to the injured list with a left knee injury. This comes following leaving Wednesday's game in New York due to knee discomfort in the second inning. This is the same knee he's had multiple surgeries on.

The timeline for his return is not yet known.

Taking Pedroia's place on the 25-man roster will be relief pitcher Marcus Walden.

"He felt a pop I think he said yesterday," president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said on Dale & Keefe Thursday. "As we know, the knee is never going to be 100 percent. It’s amazing that any player can play with what he’s gone through."

The 35-year-old has played six games since coming off the injured list on April 9 and is 2-for-20.

Pedroia has missed the vast majority of the last two seasons due to issues with the knee.
