Rodney Butler had known David Ortiz for more than 10 years.

The relationship began with the current Foxwoods' Interim CEO & Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council Chairman crossing paths with the slugger at Fenway. The former University of Connecticut defensive back routinely met up with Ortiz during visits to Fenway Park, whether it was to throw out the first pitch or simply passing through while visiting his organization's longstanding partners, the Red Sox.

And over time, the friendship evolved, with Butler and Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, sharing a birthday within days of one another resulting in more meet-ups.

Then came Saturday morning. That's when reality hit for Butler.

The link between Foxwoods and Ortiz had become official.

"I think the moment I stepped on stage and saw the sea of people affirmed we were on the right path," Butler said. "We knew he was a big deal. We knew we are a big deal. But to see all the crowd come out here today made it all worthwhile."

What Butler witnessed was a throng of fans gathered at Red Sox' Winter Weekend, huddled in front of a stage to help celebrate the new agreement between Ortiz and Foxwoods. What the announcement entailed was Ortiz joining Foxwoods' roster as a designated ambassador. In addition to appearing in upcoming marketing campaigns, the baseball icon will lend support to other exclusive initiatives on the property, including gaming tournaments and other hosted events.

For a lifelong Red Sox fan like Butler (who did admit his wife's family's Bronx roots are tough to turnover), the experience of standing with Ortiz to celebrate such a moment seemed both somewhat surreal and natural all in one.

"We’ve been great friends with David for a long, long time. He’s been a friend of the family. He’s been a friend of Foxwoods. The Red Sox partnership over the years has been fantastic," Butler said. "When you look at his brand and his image and you put that together with what we have here at Foxwoods, it was a perfect fit.

"The marketing team was talking to his team and we just said it was a no-brainer. He is iconic. Foxwoods is iconic. What better partnership could you see in New England then Foxwoods and David. So this is just an amazing dream come true, for me and the entire family."
