The Red Sox are thinking somewhat outside the box when it comes to hiring their next assistant hitting coach.

Sources confirmed Monday that the Red Sox are bringing in Peter Fatse to fill the position vacated by Andy Barkett. (The news was first reported by Brandon Warne of Zone Coverage.)

The 32-year-old Fatse is a Massachusetts native, having graduated from Minnechaug High (Wilbraham) before going on to play at the University of Connecticut. He was drafted in the 24th round by the Brewers in 2009, finishing his pro playing career in 2012 with Independent League Florence.

Fatse founded Advanced Performance Academy in Palmer, where he worked primarily before being hired to become a minor league hitting coordinator by the Twins prior to the 2019 season.
