After the Red Sox' decisive, 15-4 win over the Royals Saturday night, manager Alex Cora was forced to deal with some bad news.

Christian Vazquez was headed to the 10-day disabled list after fracturing the pinkie finger on his throwing hand.

"It's a big hit for us," Cora told reporters.

Vazquez suffered the injury after sliding into second base on a delayed steal during the seventh inning. Sandy Leon would come in as his replacement in the next inning.

The incident occurred just after Vazquez had broken a 0-for-14 skid with a key two-run single. X-rays were taken in Kansas City, but more tests were scheduled in Boston.

Blake Swihart now slides into a more prominent role, serving as Leon's backup. Swihart has only started one game at catcher, totaling 14 innings as a backstop.
